Environment
In villages nestled in the mountains and wadis, Omanis learned to harness nature to provide for their family, tribe and neighbours. In the deserts, nomadic tribes passed on their wisdom through countless generations on how to read the sands and where to find water to sustain themselves through harsh summers. Along the coast, towns and villages supported artisans, traders and fishermen who all worked in harmony with nature.
Al Madina A’Zarqa is located on a natural peninsula with a khor (creek) surrounded by marshland running through its centre. Environmental impact assessment studies were undertaken by international consultants WS Atkins Intl & Co and Al Madina A’Zarqa is using its findings to guide how the city is being built and how it interacts with the environment.
A guiding principle for the city and its agents is to ensure any activity creates as small an environmental impact as is viably possible. This principle will continue as the city expands and more people begin to live, work and visit the city and its amenities, carrying on the harmonious relationship Omanis have always had with their natural environment.
